Have questions about essential oils? We will answer them all.

Have questions? We will answer them all.

The only thing better than having oils, is being educated about them. And hopefully, this article will teach you the basics- from its authenticity to its limitations.

How are essential oils acquired?

Essential oils are plant extracts which are obtained after passing them through steam distillers. This steam, or the ‘essence’ of the plant is then condensed and the oil is extracted from it. This oil contains the quintessential aromatic, therapeutic and medicinal qualities of the plant.

How do I know that the oil I have is authentic/pure?

An essential oil is considered pure if it doesn’t have any chemicals, or it is not modified in any way. Pure oils usually list the plant's botanical name, such as Lavandula Angustifolia rather than terms like ‘essential oil of lavender’.

To check if it has been tampered with, drip a drop of oil on any paper and let it evaporate. A pure composition will not leave any stain behind (except for naturally coloured oils like sweet orange). If your oil doesn’t stain, be rest assured of its purity. Choose a chemical-free essential oil that has been extracted through steam distillation process.

How to know which oil is best suited for me?

There are essential oils for each use- be it health, skin care or hair grooming. So, the choice of oils largely depends on your concern. For instance, peppermint oil works wonders in relieving headaches while tea tree oil helps in getting rid of acne.

Can they be applied directly or a carrier is must?

A carrier agent is always suggested. Essential oils contain a dense concentration of elements which, even though 100% natural, can be harmful if used directly on skin. Therefore, they must always be mixed in small quantities with carrier oils, or agents depending on skin type. A body patch test should also be done prior to using for skin care.

Will these oil make my skin oilier?

No. essential oils don’t make skin oily; but the carrier agent does- if chosen wrongly. For instance, a drier skin type will require more viscous agents like jojoba or coconut oil, while oilier skin types must choose lighter agents like almond oil or Aloe Vera gel.

Choose your carrier agents wisely!

Can essential oils be used for culinary purposes?

Essential oils are strictly for external use only, and should not be ingested without a mandatory consultation from a doctor or a trained aroma-therapist.

How long does it take to affect?

This is a valid, yet highly subjective query. Its effects varies from person to person since the reaction time varies from person to person. Your usage, frequency and biology will majorly affect the results. For definite results, we recommend inculcating these oils in your daily lifestyle rather than using them as a medicine for a short time.

Are they fit to be used by everyone?

Essential oils are generally considered safe to be used by everyone. However, there are a few studies which prove that pregnant and breast feeding women should avoid their intake. Also, a paediatrician must be consulted before using them on children. Other factors like specific allergies and medical conditions must also be kept in mind before using essential oils.
